in Rochdale - Benefits fraud.

An elderly Nigerian illegal immigrant escaped a prison sentence
because of her age and the fact that she paid back some of the
money. Instead, the magistrate handed down 200 hours of community
service - unpaid - for nicking nearly £8,000 over three years. The
fact that her visa had expired was the thing that set the alarm
bells ringing at Rochdale Council in 2008. As an illegal immigrant
who's work permit had been withdrawn, she had no rights to benefits
as an illegal immigrant.The magistrates
said - “These were serious offences which could send you to prison.
It is your age and the fact you have repaid some of the money which
has stopped you being sent to prison.”
She now faces a bill for £256.11 court costs!
There has also been a 'collection order' made against her. |

ANot quite sure how the system will deal with a
person, who legally has to 'work' now for 200 hours unpaid, and yet
will be expected to pay back the sum of £256.11! Perhaps we are
missing something here. We will try to find out.
A local councillor said "Fraudsters living in our
area, legally or illegally, will be dealt with by the Courts, and in
certain cases will also face the threat of deportation."
