One-parent families to get financial aid in Washington - Tyne and Wear.

  November 2008

A new scheme is being set up involving the Washington Citizens Advice Bureau. It is part of a nationwide scheme called Horizons which will bring together Barclaycard and expert partners in the field to ensure help and assistance for one-parent families.

The scheme intends to help one-parent families with their problems of financial hardship - and help them build skills to ensure their own brighter future! this will include debt advice and financial education to lone parents, and also to re-train those working in the Jobcentre, to help them in their dealings with one-parent families.

Horizons is to be a multi-functional organisation, so there will be scope for referring lone-parents to other Horizons services where applicable.

The Washington project will be launched on December 5th 2008, when the contributing partners will explain their role in the new initiative. This will be followed by a 'networking' session!

Keith Telford, from Washington CAB, said: "By offering support on money management, budgeting and training professionals who work with those who are bringing up children on their own, we can work towards building a financially secure and brighter future for these parents and children."

Andrea Hughes, community manager for Barclaycard, said: "Over the last three years, the Horizons programme has supported hundreds of one-parent families with expert money management advice. This advice has made a real difference to the lives of those families."
