At present (October 21st 2011) the State Retirement Pension age for men is 65 years. Since April 2010, the Retirement Pension age for women started to increase annually in order to match the State Pension Retirement age of men. Please note: We are talking of the Retirement PENSION age and not the age that you may or may not decide to retire.. This is the law as it stands at the present time. There are changes which will almost certainly be passed by parliament soon. This will mean a further increase in the pension ages for both man and women. |
Assuming that the new bill is agreed in parliament, then the new State Pension age will be 66 years - but NOT until October 2020.
The current timetable for changing (increasing) the women's retirement pension age is set out below.

As a result of many representations, the proposed changes to the retirement pension ages has been modified for both men and women. Basically there is a slow-down of the increase to 66 years retirement pension age. The law as it stands at the moment, means an increase in State Pension Age to 67 years between years 2034 and 2036, and to 68 years between years 2044 and 2046.
The government is seeking to change this, so thiese ages will be revised soon!
We will update this page and or add to it as the situation becomes clearer, and decisions are either made, or on their way to being made.
